What Is TEREA and How Do TEREA Sticks Work?

TEREA is a line of tobacco sticks Philip Morris International makes for IQOS ILUMA devices. A thin metal element is sealed inside every stick, and the ILUMA device warms it by induction, so the tobacco is heated from within: the stick is never lit, and the device has no heating blade. What is TEREA?

TEREA is a tobacco stick made to be heated in a device rather than lit. It belongs to one device family, IQOS ILUMA, and does not fit the IQOS models that came before it. How does TEREA work?

The key part is inside the stick. Each TEREA holds a thin metal element sealed in the tobacco, and an IQOS ILUMA device heats that element by induction, which IQOS calls the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM. The heat comes from the core of the stick, so there is no flame and no blade pushed into the tobacco.

That design decides compatibility in both directions. HEETS, the sticks for earlier IQOS devices, have no metal element, so an ILUMA cannot heat them. And TEREA is not made for the blade-heated models: IQOS warns that it can damage them.

Which devices work with TEREA?

Every IQOS ILUMA model:

• the current ILUMA i range: ILUMA i PRIME, ILUMA i and ILUMA i ONE;
• the earlier ILUMA PRIME, ILUMA and ILUMA ONE.

Blade-heated models such as IQOS 3 DUO and IQOS ORIGINALS take HEETS, not TEREA. How to use TEREA, step by step

On a current ILUMA i device:

1. Push the stick into the device up to the line printed on its filter. Do not light it.
2. Heating starts by itself (AutoStart). Preheating takes about 20 seconds; begin when the device vibrates the second time.
3. Puff at your own pace. The use ends after 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first.
4. A vibration tells you when the last 30 seconds or the last 2 puffs are left.
5. Take the stick out and throw it away; the next use needs a new stick.

The earlier ILUMA models heat the same sticks within the same limits. The i range adds features such as FlexPuff, and the two-piece ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME also have a touch screen and Pause Mode.

How many puffs does a TEREA stick give, and how long does it last?

Up to 14 puffs or 6 minutes, whichever runs out first. On ILUMA i devices, FlexPuff adjusts to your puffing pace and may add up to 4 puffs, still within the 6 minutes. Once the use ends, the stick is spent.

Are TEREA cigarettes?

Many people search for "TEREA cigarettes" or "TEREA cigs", and it is the same product: TEREA sticks. They look a little like short cigarettes, but they are never lit. A TEREA stick goes into an IQOS ILUMA device, which heats the tobacco from the metal element inside it, and you draw on the filter for up to 14 puffs. TEREA sticks are sold in packs of 20 and cartons of 200, like the ones on our TEREA flavors page.

Can you smoke TEREA with a lighter?

No. TEREA is designed only to be heated inside an IQOS ILUMA device; it is not made to be lit with a lighter or a match.

Can you reuse a TEREA stick?

No. Each stick serves one use, and a used stick goes in the trash rather than back into the device.
