IQOS ILUMA i is the two-piece model of the current IQOS ILUMA i generation: a slim Holder that heats the stick and a Pocket Charger that refills it, made by IQOS, the Philip Morris International device brand. It keeps the bladeless SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM of the first IQOS ILUMA and adds a Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery. One full Pocket Charger covers 20 uses, the Holder manages up to 3 in a row, and it heats SMARTCORE STICKS only, such as the TEREA cartons we sell.

What IQOS ILUMA i adds: the smart features

The official IQOS feature list for ILUMA i has five entries, four of them new to the ILUMA line.

Touch Screen on the Holder

The screen replaces guesswork with a readout. According to IQOS it shows when preheating is under way and when it is done, how much time is left in the current use, and whether one or two more uses remain before the Holder needs the Pocket Charger. During a use, a circular indicator on the screen counts down the time left.

Pause Mode

IQOS lets you stop a use for up to 8 minutes and pick it up where it stopped. A downward swipe on the screen pauses; an upward swipe resumes, followed by a short reheat. The window is narrow by design: only in the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs, only in Performance Mode, and only for one of two back-to-back uses.

FlexPuff

FlexPuff reads how you puff and may give up to 4 extra puffs, still inside the 6-minute limit. IQOS notes that it depends on each person's pattern and does not run during a paused use.

FlexBattery

FlexBattery splits the Holder battery into two modes. Performance Mode is the default and gives up to 3 uses in a row. Eco Mode trades that for one use at a time and no Pause, and it is switched on through the IQOS app where the app is offered.

AutoStart and Autostop

Seating a stick starts the heat on its own, and an upward swipe does the same. If the stick is pulled out or shifted during a use, the Holder ends the session.

IQOS ILUMA i vs IQOS ILUMA: what changed

The first IQOS ILUMA and IQOS ILUMA i share the heating system, the 6-minute use and a Pocket Charger of the same 121.5 x 47 x 23.4 mm size. The differences sit in the Holder: the older one reports through lights and vibration and holds two uses, while the i Holder has the screen and the extra modes. This is the practical answer to the difference between IQOS ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA.

The two generations work together. IQOS says an ILUMA i Holder charges in an ILUMA Pocket Charger and the other way round, the cable and power adapter are the same, and ILUMA accessories fit the matching ILUMA i parts.

ILUMA i and IQOS ILUMA i PRIME run the same features and numbers; i PRIME gives the Pocket Charger an anodized aluminum body with a textured wrap, and at 134 g it is the heavier of the two chargers. IQOS ILUMA i ONE folds everything into one body and gives up the screen, Pause and FlexBattery in exchange for 20 uses without a recharge break.

Which sticks work in IQOS ILUMA i?

Only SMARTCORE STICKS, which have a metal element sealed inside for the induction heater to warm. IQOS names TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA as that family; USA Get Stick carries TEREA tobacco sticks and LEVIA tobacco-free nicotine sticks. HEETS do not fit this system, and IQOS warns against putting SMARTCORE sticks into older IQOS devices, which they can damage.

How to use IQOS ILUMA i

1. Charge the Pocket Charger fully before the first use.
2. Hold the Pocket Charger button for 4 seconds to switch on, and seat the Holder inside it.
3. Push a stick into the Holder up to the line on the filter; the Holder vibrates.
4. Heating starts by itself (or swipe up) and the screen shows the roughly 20-second preheat.
5. Start after the second vibration; the circle on the screen counts down the time left.
6. A vibration marks the last 30 seconds or last 2 puffs. Take the stick out and dispose of it safely.
7. Put the Holder back in the Pocket Charger to recharge.

Charging IQOS ILUMA i

The Pocket Charger takes about 135 minutes from empty with a USB-C cable and a 10 W (5V 2A) adapter; the adapter is not in the box. IQOS says adapters from IQOS 3, IQOS 3 DUO, IQOS 3 MULTI and IQOS ILUMA work, and warns that a weaker one slows charging. Between uses, the Holder refills from the Pocket Charger.

What comes in the box, and colors

IQOS lists the Holder, the Pocket Charger, a charging cable, and the user guide with safety instructions. There are no sticks and no wall adapter. IQOS shows ILUMA i in Breeze Blue, Terracotta, Leaf Green, Digital Violet and Midnight Black. For a case, IQOS offers silicone sleeves, plus door covers and metal ring sets to change the look.
