Every current IQOS ILUMA heats the same SMARTCORE sticks for the same 6-minute session, so the choice is about the device, not the taste.

• You want a screen and the option to pause: IQOS ILUMA i PRIME or IQOS ILUMA i. Both have the Touch Screen, Pause Mode and FlexBattery, and give up to 3 uses before the Holder goes back into its Pocket Charger.
• You want a metal body: IQOS ILUMA i PRIME. It carries the same features as ILUMA i in anodized aluminum with a textured wrap.
• You want one piece and long runs: IQOS ILUMA i ONE. There is no separate Holder, and a full charge covers up to 20 uses in a row, without the screen or Pause.

• ILUMA vs ILUMA PRIME: the same Holder and Pocket Charger system with the same features; PRIME adds a premium body in anodized aluminum with a wrap around the Pocket Charger. In the current generation that pair is ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME.
• ILUMA PRIME vs ILUMA ONE: PRIME is two pieces, a Holder you smoke from and a Pocket Charger that refills it; ONE is a single body with a sliding cap and no separate Holder, lighter and simpler, without a screen or Pause. The current one-piece model is ILUMA i ONE.
• ILUMA vs ILUMA i: the "i" models add a Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery on the two-piece devices, and AutoStart with FlexPuff on the one-piece. All of them heat the same TEREA sticks.

IQOS ILUMA vs ILUMA i: the differences

The heating system did not change between generations; the controls did. ILUMA i and ILUMA i PRIME add a Touch Screen on the Holder, Pause Mode, FlexPuff and FlexBattery, and raise back-to-back uses from 2 to 3. ILUMA i ONE adds AutoStart with AutoStop and FlexPuff to the one-piece shape of ILUMA ONE.

The quickest way to distinguish the models: a Holder with a screen is an ILUMA i or i PRIME; a Pocket Charger closed by a wrap is a PRIME; a single body with a sliding cap is a ONE. IQOS also says the two generations work together: an ILUMA i Holder charges in an ILUMA Pocket Charger and the reverse, the cables and adapters are shared, and accessories fit the matching models.

How an IQOS ILUMA device works

ILUMA uses the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM. Each SMARTCORE stick has a thin metal element sealed inside, and the device heats that element by induction, so the tobacco warms from within. There is no heating blade in the device, which is why ILUMA sticks and older blade-type IQOS sticks are not interchangeable. A session lasts up to 6 minutes or 14 puffs, after about 20 seconds of preheating.

Which sticks work with IQOS ILUMA?

Only SMARTCORE STICKS. IQOS names TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA as that family; USA Get Stick carries TEREA tobacco sticks and LEVIA tobacco-free nicotine sticks. As for HEETS compatibility, there is none: HEETS do not fit any ILUMA device, and IQOS warns that SMARTCORE sticks can damage earlier IQOS devices.

Charging an IQOS ILUMA

On the two-piece models the Holder does not charge from a cable: it recharges inside a Pocket Charger, and the Pocket Charger takes about 135 minutes to fill from a 5V 2A USB-C adapter. The one-piece models plug in directly and take about 90 minutes. Adapters are not in the box on the current models; IQOS says an adapter from an earlier IQOS works if it supplies 5V 2A.
