IQOS ILUMA i PRIME is a two-part heated tobacco device, a Holder plus a Pocket Charger, from IQOS, the Philip Morris International brand, which presents it as the next generation of IQOS ILUMA PRIME. It heats with the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM, so the Holder has no blade. Its smart features are a Touch Screen, Pause Mode, FlexPuff, FlexBattery and AutoStart. It takes SMARTCORE STICKS only; the ones we sell are TEREA.

How IQOS ILUMA i PRIME heats: the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM

Instead of a heating blade, the Holder uses induction to warm the metal element sealed inside each SMARTCORE stick, so the tobacco heats from within. IQOS uses this technology across its ILUMA and ILUMA i ranges, and IQOS notes that the bladeless design "requires no cleaning".

Touch Screen

IQOS sums it up as "Check device status and customise your experience with a simple touch." The Holder's screen shows preheating, time left and uses remaining (IQOS notes it does not display a third use); 0 means recharge and E means reset (hold the charger button 10 seconds with the Holder inside).

Pause Mode

Pause Mode lets you "pause your experience for up to 8 minutes and resume where you left off". Swipe down across the screen to pause and up to resume, then allow about 20 seconds to reheat. It works only in Performance Mode, within the first 3 minutes or 8 puffs, once per two back-to-back uses; a paused experience is capped at 14 puffs, and the Holder switches off if not resumed in time.

FlexPuff

FlexPuff "adapts to your pace and may provide 4 extra puffs" inside the 6-minute limit. IQOS says it depends on your puffing pattern and never runs in a paused experience. IQOS says it is on by default and can be turned off in the IQOS app where the app is available.

FlexBattery

FlexBattery gives the Holder two modes. Performance Mode, the default, allows 3 uses in a row, or 2 when one was paused, and the third depends on the charge left. Eco Mode, set in the IQOS app where it is available, allows one use at a time with no Pause.

AutoStart

In IQOS wording, "Heating starts automatically when you insert the SMARTCORE stick." An upward swipe also starts heating, IQOS says AutoStart can be switched off in the app, and Autostop ends the experience if the stick is moved or removed.

IQOS ILUMA i PRIME charging and battery

The Holder recharges inside the Pocket Charger. IQOS puts a full Pocket Charger charge at approx. 135 minutes (2 h 15 min) and asks for one before first use. A new Holder can need up to 10–12 minutes for its first full charge. We found no IQOS figure for topping up the i PRIME Holder between uses.

IQOS ILUMA i PRIME design, colors and box contents

IQOS describes "anodised aluminium combined with a refined texture wrap", with a swappable wrap that closes the Pocket Charger. IQOS shows ILUMA i PRIME colors as Aspen Green, Breeze Blue, Garnet Red and Midnight Black, and also lists Electric Purple. The box holds the Holder, the Pocket Charger, a USB Type-C cable and the user guide; per IQOS, the AC power adapter is not included, and no sticks are included.

Against ILUMA i the difference is build alone; ILUMA i ONE is a one-piece device without the screen, Pause Mode or FlexBattery. In the table, "i" is ILUMA i, "2-piece" means Holder plus Pocket Charger, and a dash means IQOS lists no such feature; all three have AutoStart. IQOS gives ILUMA i and i PRIME the same features and splits them by design, calling i PRIME "Our most refined and advanced."

ILUMA PRIME is the older model without the "i". Both are a Holder plus Pocket Charger of the same 117.2 x 44.7 x 22.2 mm size, with AutoStart, Autostop, 20 uses per charge and a 2 h 15 min charge.

The older model has no Touch Screen and uses Double tap vibrations and Lift Up lights instead. Some retail pages swap the two and call i PRIME the simpler, lights-only model; IQOS says the opposite. Holders and Pocket Chargers of the two cross-charge. We sell ILUMA i PRIME, not ILUMA PRIME.

Which sticks work with IQOS ILUMA i PRIME?

IQOS says ILUMA i PRIME works only with SMARTCORE STICKS, a family including TEREA, DELIA and LEVIA. We carry TEREA tobacco sticks and LEVIA tobacco-free nicotine sticks. Switch the Pocket Charger on by holding its button for 4 seconds (charging also turns it on), and charge it fully before first use. Push a TEREA stick into the Holder up to the line on its filter, let AutoStart heat it, and begin after the second vibration. A buzz warns when 30 seconds or 2 puffs remain.
